Gina Burchenal Grant: $3,000
Farmer’s market favorite Tamale Addiction is a woman-led, Austin-based food company specializing in traditionally prepared organic tamales made without lard or hydrogenated oils. Known for its creative vegan and vegetarian varieties, this brainchild of owners Mariana Ibañez and Adrian Parades has been a staple of local events like South by Southwest and the Austin City Limits Music Festival.
Tamale Addiction will use grant funds to launch a line of innovative cook-it-yourself tamalada kits to share the tradition and love of tamale-making nationwide. The kits will come with video and visual graphics that will teach home cooks how to prepare, cook, and best enjoy their tamales while offering a glimpse at the iconic dish’s Texan heritage. Available to ship nationwide, the kits will keep the beloved tradition of tamalada alive while providing a stay-at-home activity for families and friends.
